Track playing...
The Journey Freud (Tantajo Records) www.tantajorecords.com Strangely, a few years back, the Kindred Spirit website used to get more visitors from Germany than the UK, and maybe it still does. Perhaps less surprising, New Age music is way more popular over there, apparently. Plus the music press in every country other than the UK seem far happier to tolerate new artists playing in old styles. So it comes as no surprise that Freud are pretty popular in their native Germany and beyond, producing positive euro-pop in the Enya/Enigma style. Okay, the vast oceanic reverb they’ve used to immerse the ubiquitous virtual massed choirs and pizzicato orchestras could possibly have floated the odd battleship too, but the rich, soaring melodies in every track, the odd sweet little Kraftwerk-like motifs and the variety of evocative ethnic tribal-trance drone textures all enliven the uplifting messages whispered shimmering in the crystal voice of a young Cora O’Donovan from Cork. Yes, The Journey is not free of a few clichés (but then nor is this review!) but one of the many things that make it ultimately work is the variety in style and composition from track to track. - Kinski, April '07 News from Glenn at Tantajo Records:
