An Audience of Angels – Llewellyn (Paradise Music)

There seems to come a time in many successful artists’ lives when they leave their present genre to re-visit something of their personal past. Lennon went rock’n’roll, Bowie chose his pin-ups and Rod Stewart found his great American Songbook. And for Llewellyn, one of the UK’s bestselling New Age artists, his familiar territory is, I suspect, 80’s pop. Not that this CD is a retro thing as such, perhaps more an attempt to prove to himself and the world that he is also capable of writing accessible, catchy pop songs – and he sings them well too.

Even in its more sombre, sensitive moments, a joyfulness seems to pervade this album – most evident when sporting a jaunty swing cast off by a young George Michael and Wham! (And why the hell not?!) And there’s mischief in the CD’s title and cover pic too which portrays Llewellyn on stage in front of an audience of angels. This puts a whole new spin on Lennon’s assertion of being ‘bigger than Jesus’, and I can only assume that L has developed the ability to sing with one fork of his devilish tongue firmly in cheek! Good for him. Llewellyn and I may have had our spats in the past but I can’t help liking his ‘pop’ album really rather a lot.
