Poor old James Blunt: the way the media built him up, to then make it the height of fashion to tear him down a few months later. At least he’s got a sizable wedge with which to blunt the knives. Whereas all over the country there are equally talented (or differently talented) singer-songwriters who are unlikely to make it beyond the pubs and clubs and have to find a ‘proper job’ before they’re 35 (if they’re sensible). Bring back socialism I say! Why not share out the goodies so that more artists can live a good life bringing live music to all our doorsteps?

David James Herbert is a case in point: here’s a talented, passionate songwriter with a good voice who’s working his proverbials off gigging the clubs – and who knows, he might make it. But then again he might not. Does he deserve it? any more than my mate Simon Scott? or your mate, who you love to see playing down the pub or at the local festie? Turn up your Silence is a fine album, so why not take a risk, rather than getting another yawningly predictable David Gray CD? Power to the underdog. Yeah.
