The Great Departure Shaun T Hunter (Local Nobody Records) www.shaunthunter.com Being a musician rather than a poet, I freely admit that I have to consciously will myself to listen to lyrics; hence my appreciation of them is comparatively stilted. Nonetheless, I find myself wanting to include a new or lesser-known singer-songwriter each issue, in response to the mainstream media machine that continues to pump up a few fashionable dudes at the expense of the rest. What initially struck me about this CD is the sheer quality of the arrangements. So many singer-songwriters fetter themselves by always singing and playing everything themselves in real time. Whereas Shaun has obviously carefully reassessed his guitar-based compositions and enhanced them to become real ensemble pieces by selecting the right mix of instruments song by song, and at times including the more unusual, like flugal horn or cello. Consequently there’s some truly beautiful, sensitive work here. As a singer-songwriter he reminds me a little of Pat Orchard, the legendary Jason Feddy and the more familiar Nick Drake, though in comparison, this music at times doesn’t so much drip with yearning emotion as drench you in it though probably to great effect live when Shaun’s physical presence would ground the experience in reality. Definitely worth a listen check out the KS online JukeBox now! - Kinski, April '07
