Come to Shiloh – Vividity (NorthernWood) www.vividity.com

I’m not sure whether the marvellous name Vividity is a persona of Seattle-based singer/songwriter Andrew Pederson, or actually part of the album title. But no worries, because ‘coming to Shiloh’ is a rewarding journey either way.

This is Andrew’s first solo CD after years of fronting guitar-based pop/rock bands. Without a guitar in earshot, this well-crafted and varied collection of imaginative retro electro-pop songs shows a fine pedigree, as well as sporting an infectiously slick vocal. Reminiscent of Nick Kershaw (with perhaps a dab of David Sylvian), Pederson’s voice offers a retrospective glance at the lush feel and phrasing of pop-rocksters of the 80’s, and whilst a couple of tracks (probably unwittingly) borrow something from the keyboard style of prog-musos Camel, what is remarkable about this album is its freshness. Eclectic whilst remaining original, it also weaves Amerindian threads into its (at times) almost techno mix. Lyric themes honour indigenous peoples, plus Spirit, romance and love.

Comfortably downtempo, Vividity holds the interest whilst not becoming too invasive. A music for many moods.
