Dial M for Mantra – Jai Uttal, remixed by Rara Avis/Shaman’s Dream (Sounds True)
Over recent decades, Jai Uttal has achieved iconic status in the world music genre for his ability to mix’n’match diverse musical materials and influences whilst still retaining, at least to some degree, their inherent spiritual essence. For this recording however, he handed over his kirtan recordings ‘in the raw’ to remix artist Rara Avis of the music collective Shaman’s Dream. Sadly for us, Rara seems at present to be suffering a recurring nightmare in which he is the wielder of an un-magical wand that renders everything it touches soulless, bland and more than a little predictable. Shame Jai didn’t share his recordings with Eno and Byrne who long ago proved their innovative mastery of working with sourced material on their definitive ‘My Life in the Bush of Ghosts’ album.
