Embalasasa – Samite Rykodisc Ltd
www.samite.com

Samite was born and raised in Uganda and has, since the 1980s, been enchanting audiences far and wide with his original compositions and mellifluous vocals delivered in his mother tongue. He is also the founder of the non-profit organisation, Musicians for World Harmony, and proceeds from his album sales go to help the children of war-torn countries.

Embalasasa, Samite’s latest in a long list of albums interweaves many subjects dear to him: native African fables and their morals, musings on the journey of life, of the experience of grief, of childhood, and of nature. Embalasasa is the name of a beautifully coloured, but deadly, lizard that has recently inhabited Uganda. In this album Samite uses it as a symbol to typify how deadly AIDS has been transmitted through the beautiful, vibrant and natural act of sex to ravage much of Africa.

I think I may have already given enough good reasons to buy some of Samite’s music, as finally I am (almost) at a loss for words to describe how deeply touching I find these gentle evocations. With wraparound grooves, carressing kalimbas, lulling, lilting flutes and heart-warming vocals you can almost feel the heat rising from a distant African landscape. Go warm yourselves!
